What Is an Impacted Tooth?

Teeth that cannot take their place in the mouth for various reasons, even though it is time for them to erupt, are called "impacted teeth". Third molars (wisdom teeth) are among the most commonly impacted teeth. If there is not enough room in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to erupt and they have still not erupted by the age of 25, they are considered "impacted".

Sometimes these teeth erupt partially but never reach their full height. If your wisdom teeth have not yet erupted, you can visit your dentist to learn about your situation and have the tooth removed before problems such as pain, swelling, infection, decay and gum disease, which impacted teeth can cause, arise.

Why Don't Third Molars Erupt Properly?

Although the jawbones of evolving humans have gradually become smaller, the number of molars has not fully decreased. As a result, there is usually no room left for the wisdom teeth, the last to erupt, in the mouths of modern humans. Wisdom teeth can erupt between the ages of 15 and 25.

What Problems Can Impacted Wisdom Teeth Cause?

Cysts and tumors can form around impacted wisdom teeth.

Partially erupted wisdom teeth are also a serious source of infection. In addition to pain, these teeth can cause gum problems and abscesses. However, not every wisdom tooth causes these problems.

Can't I Just Take Antibiotics?

Antibiotics can only provide short-term relief. Because unconscious and widespread use of many different antibiotics is common, the antibiotics taken may not always work against the microorganisms causing the complaints.
